This role is for one of Weekday’s clients Min Experience: 13+ years Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra, India JobType: full-time We are looking for an experienced and highly accountable Engineering Leader to lead backend engineering teams and drive the design, development, and delivery of scalable, reliable, and high-performance technology systems. This is a senior leadership position for a hands-on technology professional who combines strong backend engineering expertise with exceptional people management, ownership, and execution skills . The ideal candidate will have 13–25 years of experience building and scaling backend systems and leading high-performing engineering teams. You will work closely with senior stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Business, and Operations to translate organizational goals into robust technology solutions and deliver measurable business outcomes. Requirements Key Responsibilities • Lead, mentor, and develop backend engineering teams, creating a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. • Take end-to-end ownership of engineering initiatives, from technical strategy and architecture through execution, deployment, and ongoing optimization. • Define and drive backend engineering strategy aligned with product and business objectives. • Architect and oversee the development of scalable, secure, resilient, and high-performance backend services, APIs, and distributed systems. • Establish strong engineering practices around code quality, testing, observability, reliability, security, and performance. • Partner closely with Product and Business leaders to prioritize initiatives, manage trade-offs, and ensure timely delivery. • Build and maintain a strong engineering talent pipeline, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development. • Identify technical risks and bottlenecks proactively and drive effective solutions across teams. • Review and guide critical architectural and technical decisions while maintaining appropriate engineering standards. • Drive engineering excellence through automation, process improvements, technical documentation, and operational best practices. • Ensure teams consistently deliver high-quality software while balancing speed, scalability, and long-term maintainability. • Act as a technical and organizational leader, influencing decisions beyond the immediate engineering function. Must-Have Skills People Management • Proven experience leading and scaling backend engineering teams. • Strong ability to hire, mentor, motivate, and retain high-performing engineers and engineering managers. • Experience managing performance, setting goals, developing talent, and building effective team structures. • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills. Ownership • Strong sense of accountability with a track record of taking initiatives from concept to successful execution. • Ability to operate independently, make sound decisions, and drive outcomes in ambiguous and fast-changing environments. • Strong execution mindset with the ability to balance strategic thinking and operational details. Backend Engineering • Deep expertise in backend development and distributed systems. • Strong experience with one or more backend programming languages such as Java, Python, Go, Node.js, or similar . • Experience designing scalable APIs, microservices, databases, messaging systems, and cloud-based architectures. • Strong understanding of system design, performance optimization, reliability, security, and scalability. • Experience working with modern cloud platforms, DevOps practices, and production-grade engineering environments. Experience • 13–25 years of overall software engineering experience , with significant experience in backend engineering and technical leadership. • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex, large-scale technology initiatives.
