Job Description

Teacher of Art & Visual Arts Location: Waltham Forest, East/Outer London School Type: Secondary School & Sixth Form (Co-educational) Contract: Full-Time, Permanent or Fixed-Term Start Date: Immediate / ASAP or January Start An ambitious, culturally vibrant secondary school and Sixth Form in the East London Borough of Waltham Forest is seeking an articulate, creative, and dynamic Teacher of Art to join their renowned Visual Arts & Creative Design faculty. Situated in a borough famed for its rich artisan history, textile traditions, and thriving creative enterprise, this is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated visual arts educator—whether an experienced practitioner eager to lead A-Level Fine Art and Graphic Communication or an ambitious Early Career Teacher (ECT)—to foster artistic ambition, technical mastery, and visual literacy across a talented student body. About the Role As a Teacher of Art, you will transform observational drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital media into inspiring, high-rigor studio learning. Joining a highly collaborative and expressive department, you will deliver compelling lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Art & Design / Graphic Communication / Textiles), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Fine Art / Photography / Art History), equipping young creatives with the technical craftsmanship, conceptual depth, and portfolio sophistication needed for top arts universities and creative industry pathways. • Environment: A creative Outer London secondary campus featuring expansive, natural-light studio spaces, dedicated printmaking equipment, ceramics kilns, digital photography suites (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud), and gallery display areas • Culture: A supportive, expressive department committed to studio-based learning, exhibition culture, collaborative curriculum design, and active engagement with London’s world-class gallery and museum network Key Responsibilities • Plan and deliver academically rich, studio-focused Art lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 covering drawing techniques, color theory, printmaking, 3D sculpture, digital illustration, and contextual art history. • Prepare GCSE and A-Level candidates thoroughly for practical controlled assessments, portfolio submissions, and final exhibition moderations through structured technique workshops, 1-to-1 tutorial guidance, and data-driven progress tracking. • Foster an inclusive, studio-mindset classroom culture where creative risk-taking, constructive critique, and individual artistic voice are encouraged and celebrated. • Track, evaluate, and monitor student progress systematically, tailoring instruction to stretch high-aspiring artists preparing for art foundation courses while scaffolding core technical skills for developing learners. • Contribute actively to departmental enrichment, including after-school studio clubs, gallery trips, life drawing workshops, community art initiatives, and curating annual student art exhibitions. Requirements • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential. • A strong academic degree in Fine Art, Visual Communication, Art History, Design, or a closely related creative discipline. • Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering outstanding Art instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level Art teaching capability is highly desirable). • Thorough knowledge of national Art examination board specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and studio health and safety practices (COSHH). • Outstanding personal portfolio, strong practical studio skills across diverse media, and an infectious enthusiasm for visual culture and creative education. Salary & Benefits • Pay Scale: Outer London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Outer London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for Key Stage Art Coordination, Photography Lead, or Creative Arts Enrichment Lead. • Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured mentoring pathways, studio access, and staff health and wellbeing amenities. How to Apply If you are an ambitious Art specialist ready to inspire the next generation of visual artists, designers, and creative thinkers at a dynamic secondary school in Waltham Forest, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your application and CV as soon as possible for consideration.
