Networking for People Who Hate Networking
Redefine Networking
Networking isn't schmoozing at events with a stack of business cards. It's building genuine professional relationships over time. And introverts actually have a natural advantage.
The Introvert's Networking Playbook
1. Start Online: LinkedIn comments, Twitter discussions, and Slack communities let you network from your couch. Quality comments on industry leaders' posts get noticed.
2. One-on-One Coffee Chats: Skip the mixer. Request 20-minute virtual coffee chats with people in roles you admire. Come with 3 specific questions.
3. Give Before You Ask: Share an article they'd find useful. Introduce them to someone in your network. Congratulate them on achievements. Build goodwill first.
4. Set Small Goals: "Connect with 2 new people this month" is better than "attend 5 networking events."
5. Follow Up Within 48 Hours: A short, specific follow-up message after meeting someone dramatically increases the chance of a lasting connection.
The 5-5-5 Rule
Each week: reach out to 5 existing contacts, engage with 5 industry posts, and connect with 5 new people. Takes 30 minutes total.
