What Recruiters Actually See in the First 7 Seconds of Your Resume
There is a number that gets repeated so often in career advice that almost nobody checks it: recruiters spend five seconds on your resume. Sometimes it is six. Sometimes it is three. The figure changes depending on who is telling you.
The most commonly cited real measurement comes from a 2018 eye-tracking study by Ladders, which put the initial scan at roughly 7.4 seconds. That study watched where recruiters' eyes actually moved rather than asking them to estimate afterwards, which is why it is worth more than the round numbers that circulate without a source.
Seven seconds is not a lot. But it is nearly 50% more than the "five second" version of the myth, and the difference matters — because the question is not how fast they read. It is what they look at, in what order, and what makes them stop.
The scan is a shape, not a sequence
The eye-tracking data shows something more useful than a duration. Recruiters do not read top to bottom. On a well-structured resume, their gaze traces something close to an F-pattern: a strong horizontal sweep across the top, a shorter sweep across the next block, then a vertical skim down the left margin, sampling the first few words of each line.
Three consequences follow directly from that shape, and they are the whole game:
- The top third carries most of the decision. Your name, current title, and the first role in your history sit inside the first horizontal sweep. If those three things do not establish what you are, the rest is being read by someone who has already started to disengage.
- The left edge is prime real estate. During the vertical skim, the recruiter sees the opening words of each bullet and little else. A bullet that begins "Responsible for coordinating…" spends its most valuable characters on nothing.
- Unstructured text defeats the pattern entirely. A dense paragraph has no left-edge entry points to skim. Eye-tracking on poorly structured resumes shows an erratic, searching gaze — the reader is hunting rather than scanning, and hunting is what people stop doing after seven seconds.
Before and after: the same experience, rewritten for the scan
The most common failure is not weak experience. It is strong experience buried behind weak openings. Here is what that looks like in practice.
Before
Responsible for the management of the customer support queue and worked with the product team on recurring issues that customers were reporting.
After
Cut average support response time from 14 hours to 3 by triaging the queue by issue type; fed the top 5 recurring bugs to product, closing 3 permanently.
The work described is identical. The second version front-loads a verb and a number, so the first three words visible in a left-margin skim are "Cut average support" rather than "Responsible for the."

Notice what the "after" versions have in common: a concrete verb in position one, a number early, and no adjectives doing work that evidence should be doing. "Proven track record" is a claim. "$2M to $5M" is a fact. Only one of them survives a seven-second scan.
Resolving the ATS-versus-human contradiction
Most advice tells you two things that appear to conflict. Load your resume with keywords so the applicant tracking system ranks you. Also keep it clean and scannable for the human. Writers rarely explain how to do both, so people split the difference and do neither well.
The contradiction dissolves once you notice the two readers want the same thing in different formats — and that they read at different times.
The ATS is a parser. It wants text it can extract and terms it can match. It fails on multi-column layouts, text inside images, header/footer content, and creative section names like "Where I've Made an Impact." It does not care about elegance.
The human is a scanner. They want structure and evidence. They fail on dense paragraphs, vague openers, and buried numbers.
Neither reader is asking for keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is what happens when you try to satisfy the machine by volume instead of by placement. The resolution is placement:
- Use conventional section headings — Experience, Skills, Education. The parser recognises them and the human's F-pattern expects them in those positions.
- Put the role's actual language inside your achievement bullets, where it reads naturally to a person and parses cleanly for a machine. "Migrated 40+ reports to Looker" contains the keyword "Looker" and is also a real accomplishment.
- Use a single-column layout with standard fonts. Multi-column designs are the most common cause of a resume parsing into nonsense, and they also break the left-margin skim the human relies on.
- Skip the skills-word-cloud. It parses as a list of nouns with no evidence attached, and in a vertical skim it is a wall the eye slides off.
Do those four things and you are not compromising between two audiences. You are giving both of them what they were actually asking for.
A seven-second self-test
Print your resume, or view it at 40% zoom so the words blur. Look at it for seven seconds, then look away and answer three questions:
- What is this person's current role and level?
- What are the two most impressive numbers on the page?
- What kind of job are they applying for?
If you cannot answer all three, a recruiter will not either — and they will not be trying as hard as you are. The fix is almost never more content. It is moving the evidence you already have into the positions the eye actually visits.
