Emotional Intelligence at Work — Why It Matters More Than IQ
EQ Predicts Career Success
Research shows emotional intelligence accounts for 58% of job performance and is the strongest predictor of leadership effectiveness. It's also a skill you can develop at any age.
The Four EQ Domains
1. Self-Awareness: Recognizing your emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and triggers in real-time. Practice: Daily 5-minute reflection journal.
2. Self-Management: Controlling impulses, managing stress, and adapting to change. Practice: Pause 6 seconds before reacting to emotional triggers.
3. Social Awareness: Reading the room, understanding others' emotions, and organizational awareness. Practice: In your next meeting, observe body language and unspoken dynamics.
4. Relationship Management: Inspiring others, managing conflict, and building bonds. Practice: Have one genuine conversation about a colleague's goals this week.
EQ in Interviews
Behavioral questions are essentially EQ tests. "Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult colleague" is testing your self-management and relationship management skills.
