In an economy that values rare and valuable skills, the ability to perform deep work — focused, distraction-free concentration on cognitively demanding tasks — is increasingly rare and therefore increasingly valuable.
The Deep Work Rules
Rule 1: Work Deeply. Schedule specific blocks for deep work. Start with 90 minutes and build up. Protect these blocks like important meetings.
Rule 2: Embrace Boredom. Train your brain to resist distraction. If you reach for your phone every time you're bored, you're training your brain for shallow thinking.
Rule 3: Quit Social Media (or Limit It). Evaluate each tool by whether it substantially helps your professional goals. Be ruthless about eliminating low-value digital distractions.
Rule 4: Drain the Shallows. Minimize shallow work (email, meetings, admin) to maximize time for high-value output.

Deep work practitioners produce more valuable output in less time. This leads to faster skill acquisition, higher quality deliverables, and faster career advancement.
Implementation
- Block 2-4 hours daily for deep work (ideally morning)
- Use a shutdown ritual at end of workday
